| Histoire de la poésie anglaise English poetry starts in the middle of the 17th century.
I. The Middle Ages
The first poetry appeared in the 14th century with a poem called Piers Plowman by William Langland. Geoffrey Chaucer is another first poet.
Influence of Virgile and Dante.
II. The Renaissance
-explorations -cultural influences (Italy) -the Reformation (Catholics X Protestants) -1474 : Caxton => Nouvelle imprimerie

b) Elizabethan Period -emprunt de thème à d'autres traditions européennes -the Elizabethan song tradition -a courtly poetry => monarch Spenser, The Faerie Queen Sidney, Arcadia

Verse-base drama (mélange de théâtre et de poésie) => Shakespeare

Au 19e, la poésie devient spécifiquement américaine. Au début du 20e, inversion des rôles. La poésie anglaise s'inspire de la poésie américaine.
